Simpson hence became the first presidential appointee who is a transgender. The show’s announcer, Alan Kalter, reacted as if he had dated Simpson after Letterman mentioned the appointment.
“What?” he cried, “Amanda used to be a dude? My God.” He then ran off stage. In a statement on Wednesday, the Human Rights Coalition demanded an apology, telling Letterman, “Your skit affirmed and encouraged a prejudice against transgender Americans that keeps many from finding jobs, housing, and enjoying freedoms you and your writers take for granted every day.” Another group, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination, said in a message to Letterman, “Instead of using humor to raise awareness about the lives of transgender people, the show ridiculed the first transgender Presidential appointee and one of the most vulnerable minorities in this country.” However, some writers on gay blogs pointed out that the sketch was intended to make the announcer’s reaction to the news appear ridiculous. Actually a Compliment?” noting, “The funny part is about Simpson being hot. Which — have you seen her? — she is. And that she’s accomplished passing as a woman — the ultimate goal of so many transgender women.”
